The Process

Showing up with a camera is just a single part of the process.
The magic is in the details of what happens before and after our filming day.

Pre-production

Pre-Production is the first step of the process. This is where all the planning happens to assure the project will go smoothly & successfully. This phase includes strategy & creative development, art direction, scripting & interview question writing, location scouting, shot listing & storyboarding, budgeting, & additional logistics preparation.

  • Sometimes you come knowing the goal you need to achieve, but not yet knowing how to get there. In this case, I collaborate with you to figure out the best way to reach that goal.

Other times you come knowing exactly what you need, so my job is primarily to turn it into a reality for you.

I work both ways and I’m happy to conceptualize as much as you need.

  • In video production, there are limitless possibilities to visually present all aspects of your video. This comes from locations/set, to wardrobe, to lighting & coloring of the image. These decisions guide the audience to feel a certain way while they’re watching your video. Depending on the project, we sometimes have control over all of these aspects, and sometimes over just a few. But whatever the case, each aspect that we can control is carefully planned & curated for the audience.

  • As needed, we take care of scripting and/or creating interview questions that will get at the heart of the core message & story of the video.

  • Location is an integral part of the storytelling process, so finding the right location, visiting it, securing it, & planning how to portray that location in the larger story is important.

  • Getting a solidified idea of what we’re going to capture on the day of filming helps to save time & money while on set. There’s always room for spontaneity, but we always have a plan going in.

  • Prior to filming, we’ll have a check-in to go over a pre-production deck with all aspects of the plan in it. This is where you can provide any final feedback about the plan and/or sign off on it before heading into filming!

Production

This part of the process is where the filming happens. We’ve made the plan and now we have to execute on it. Every production looks different, but by this point, we should have a good idea of what this one will look like.

  • By this point, I’ve hired any crew that is needed (including but not limited to Director, Cinematographer, Camera Operator(s), Production Assistants, etc.) I hire based on the budget and the needs of the project, which means it may be only me and you on set, or it may be multiple people covering various roles. Whatever the needs for your project, I can assure you that the best people for the job will be on set on the day of filming.

  • I typically film using my own Sony kit (with various G Master lenses) and my own professional lighting and audio kit. If the project calls for something else, my team and I have experience in dozens of different setups, so we’ll use the best setup for your specific needs.

  • This is when all filming is complete. During this step, we clean up sets, relieve all production-only crew, and back up & organize all footage to make sure that everything safely makes it back to the editing room

Post-Production & Delivery

This is where the story comes together. Now that everything is filmed, we must construct the narrative and create the final, compelling videos. This is where the editing, audio sweetening, music selection & clearances, color grading, motion graphics & effects, closed captions, revisions, & final delivery happens.

  • In this step, I cut down & weave interviews or scripted segments to build the narrative, and then overlay all b-roll (additional visual footage) on top to bring the narrative to life.

  • Sound:

Half of watching something is listening to it. So this part is important!

This is when we sweeten the audio & decide on the music that will carry the viewer through.

Sweetening the audio refers to leveling it all out & often further mixing and mastering to make it pop.

Sound design (sound effects) and music is also added to build the auditory world in which this video lives. All of the sound effects & music that I use in your videos are pre-cleared for commercial use (so no need to worry about any copyright strikes on your accounts).

  • The way the video is colored has a subtle but powerful effect on the way the final video is perceived. This is where I create warm & inviting tones vs. cold & distant feelings, and anything in between, depending on how we want the audience to feel while watching specific scenes.

  • This refers to any lower thirds, brand inclusion, or additional graphics that support the story that’s being told.

  • It’s usually a good idea to make sure that your captions are accurate, for added accessibility. We can burn captions into the final video, or give you a sidecar file when needed! (We can also help you determine what your caption needs are based on your final use of the video.)

  • You have a chance to tell me what you think and leave notes for the video. After all it’s your video and I want you to LOVE every second of it. Each project comes with 2 rounds of revisions per video, and we almost never need more than that. Our notes system utilizes Vimeo’s Review section, so it’s as simple as clicking and typing for you to leave time-stamped notes.

  • All projects are delivered digitally, unless otherwise agreed upon. A download link is emailed straight to your inbox!
